With a little over a month left before the incomparable Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland comes to life, I’m planning to read “all things Alice”. A couple of years ago, Frank Beddor began a trilogy called The Looking Glass Wars and I’ve just finished the final installment, Arch Enemy. Wonderland’s warring factions are battling for supremacy and the characters are familiar but more brutal than any found in the original. If you like books with interesting characters and lots of battles, this trilogy is for you!

Frank Beddor has also written 2 graphic novels to accompany his series and a third is forthcoming. Hatter M. is the focus of the comic versions.
We now have these outstanding graphic novels in our library. Hatter M. is full of extra Wonderland information as well as having an exciting story of its own. Ben Templesmith’s illustrations are engaging and artistic. His uses of color and blurring effects add to the visual interest. Hatter M. is searching for Alyss after being separated from her as they tried to transport back to Wonderland through the portal. He searches Paris and comes in contact with a kidnapping ring in Budapest. Frank Beddor teamed up with Liz Cavalier on these comics. Volume Two takes Hatter to an asylum and the battlefields of the Civil War. In this volume he creates the deck of Wonderland cards.
Next I’ll be reading the original Lewis Carroll classic and a new adult book Alice I Have Been. Look for more about these books later this month.
I just finished Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and what a treat it was to read it again. One thing I really enjoyed was getting all of the jokes. I remembered the story, but I know that some of the sections that were more about plays on words and symbolism than plot passed me by when I read the book as a young person. I am even more eager to see what they do with the movie now that I’ve done the re-read.
